The LIFE+ TREMEDAL project to record peatland soil temperatures (21/11/2014)

The team from the University of Oviedo / Atlantic Botanical Gardens has deployed several thermometers in Vegas de Liordes and Comeya as part of the LIFE+ TREMEDAL project. These thermometers will record soil temperatures over the next five years, providing valuable information on the peculiar ecological characteristics of these habitats. The thermometers at Vegas de Liordes and Comeya join a network of thermometers which have already been installed at another seven peatland sites in the Cantabrian Mountains.

The network follows the methodology of the well-known GLORIA project, which aims to observe the effects of climate change on mountain ecosystems. The data collected will allow us to understand the distinctive thermal features of waterlogged and peatland soils, and produce models related to ecophysiological processes, such as germination control. We will also be able to compare it with the data on vegetation obtained from the future monitoring of areas fenced off from livestock.
