The University of Santiago de Compostela\u2019s Institute of Agricultural Biodiversity and Rural Development <\/b>(Ibader) celebrated World Wetlands Day on Thursday with an awareness-raising and information day for primary school pupils from the CEIP Santa Maria do Valadouro infant and primary school.<\/p>\n

The event, which was attended by the University of Santiago de Compostela\u2019s Assistant Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Pablo Ramil Rego, was an activity within the range of dissemination tasks supporting the European project Life+Tremedal \u2018Inland wetlands of the Northern Iberian Peninsula: Management and restoration of mires and wet environments\u2019.<\/p>\n

The University of Santiago de Compostela\u2019s Assistant Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, and coordinator of the Life+Tremedal project, Pablo Ramil, the Deputy of the Provincial Council of Lugo responsible for the Environment and Renewable Energies, Sonsoles L\u00f3pez Izquierdo, the Mayor of O Valadouro, Edmundo Maseda Maseda, and teachers from the school took part in this World Wetlands Day event. This Day has been celebrated on the 2nd<\/sup> of February ever since 1997 to commemorate the date on which the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, signed in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar, was adopted.<\/p>\n

The event allowed the speakers taking part to show the pupils from the school the different types of wetland in the Terras do Mi\u00f1o Biosphere Reserve using audiovisual media and inform them about the importance of these natural resources and their worth to citizens in their day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n

After the speeches, the technical staff from Ibader in charge of the Life+Tremedal project also spoke about the values and importance of conserving the district\u2019s wetlands, and handed out awareness-raising material to the schoolchildren.<\/p>\n
